Construction of a tunnel under airport
The project consists in boring an 820 m long tunnel, 400 m of which are covered, under the runway of Antwerp airport, with exit and access in the “open cut method.” The works require the implementation of specific construction techniques, because the “working height” is extremely limited in the extension of the landing runway during the airport operating hours. The works also include the road surfacing in the tunnel with a cycle path , as well as the signalling and the electromechanical installations (lighting, ventilation, pumps, detection and surveillance systems, etc.). This is a public “Engineering and Build” contract, i.e. an integrated contract in which the construction project – and in particular the choices of design and execution plans – are entrusted to a single winning bidder.
